Intensive Outpatient Program

Our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) also referred to as Level IV is an intensive chemical dependency program for adolescents and adults who have a substance use addiction. This structured therapeutic service allows clients to receive cognitive-behavioral and evidence-based treatment in a less restrictive, safe, and supportive environment. Prior to engaging in treatment, clients complete a detailed alcohol and drug assessment, in which a level of care is determined and provided in accordance to their individual strengths and needs as reflected in the placement criteria of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM). Next, clients develop individualized treatment plans by identifying and specifying interventions, goals, and tasks tailored to meet their unique needs. Every client’s treatment plan is recurrently reviewed and updated as goals are met, until s/he is ready to transition into recovery without a structured treatment setting.

IOP services are offered three days a week for both adolescents and adults. We offer a variety of morning, afternoon, and evening times. IOP includes individual and group counseling sessions, while we encourage family participation to foster and improve each client’s family/social relationships as well as a supportive measure for his/her recovery. We encourage clients to actively participate in their recovery by learning skills development and taking personal accountability and responsibility to live an alcohol and/or drug free life every day.

Beacon of Hope Wellness Center uses an evidence-based curriculum and holistic approaches that focus on the cognitive aspects of addiction and its underlying issues. We use cognitive-behavioral health interventions in group counseling, which clients learn to restructure thinking patterns associated with addiction while reinforcing positive behavioral actions to effectively conduct their daily lives. Some of the topics include triggers and cravings; impulse control; stress management; self-care; nutrition; pharmacology; lapse and relapse prevention; total abstinence; money management; harm reduction strategies; recreational activities, and managing legal issues. In addition, we offer Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT), including Suboxone and Vivitrol, to help reduce or eliminate alcohol and drug cravings, and reduce the ability to get an euphoric rush/high from these substances. MAT is most effective when combined with outpatient AOD treatment like IOP and OP.

Our substance abuse counselors conduct random urinalysis screenings of clients as part of the IOP. They collaborate with fellow treatment team members and providers involved with the client’s treatment to ensure the client is receiving effective services; make referrals to link clients to other community supports like Alcohol Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA); conduct couple and family counseling, and write court reports. Clients benefit from IOP services as they are more prepared to live a life of sobriety with decreased mental health symptoms like anxiety. When clients complete treatment and are in recovery, we provide aftercare and follow-up services.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is an IOP?

Our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is for adolescents and adults who are experiencing moderate to severe problems with alcohol and/or drugs. We want clients to find insight, guidance, and hope for a new future and life; therefore, we provide education, prevention, treatment, and support services through our structured treatment program. Our competent, qualified, experienced, and interdisciplinary team use evidence-based, motivational, and cognitive-behavioral health approaches and interventions to engage and educate our clients to gain insight into their addictive thinking and behaviors by providing recovery education, skills development, relapse prevention training, and routine alcohol and drug screens.

What is substance abuse?

Substance abuse also known as an addiction is when an individual repeatedly and excessively uses substances to achieve a certain effect. While alcohol is the most commonly abused legal drug, other addictive substances include tobacco, marijuana, methamphetamine, prescription drugs, cocaine, inhalants, and opioids. Substances like oxycontin and heroin produce a calming and relaxing state, while substances like cocaine, Adderall, crack cocaine, and ecstasy produce an euphoric rush and elevated feelings of alertness and energy. Some substances can be taken orally, snorted, or injected.

Substance abuse users have a built-up tolerance and dependence of these addictive substances, which result from a change in brain chemistry; thereby, making it difficult to quit abusing alcohol and/or drugs. Addiction affects the mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual aspects of an individual’s life. There are serious health risks and side effects of long-term chemical dependency including seizures; heart attacks; lethargic movements; insomnia; paranoia; mood imbalance; cardiovascular issues; weight loss; bronchitis; nose bleeds; hepatitis; HIV, and slowed mental functioning. Furthermore, individuals who struggle with alcohol and drugs experience work, financial, and relationship problems.

Beacon of Hope Wellness Center believes individuals with a substance use disorder can manage this disease, regain control of their life, and live a long-term life of sobriety. Our treatment team of psychiatric providers and Licensed/Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselors are here to walk alongside you every step of the way through your journey to recovery. We offer a compassionate, safe, supportive, and structured environment where staff treats you with dignity and respect as you learn and develop tools and life skills needed for long-lasting recovery.

How do I know if I am addicted to alcohol or drugs?

You are likely addicted if you struggle with alcoholism or drug addiction; you can’t stop using alcohol and/or drugs, and are tolerant and dependent by regular and excessive use. Also, your chemical dependence disrupts your relationships, finances, home, school, and work. Additionally, your alcohol or drug use causes problematic behavioral problems like stealing money to fuel your alcohol/drug habits; driving under the influence/while impaired; selling sex for drugs; drinking on the job, and violent and aggressive behaviors.

Is IOP the right treatment choice for me?

The first step is to complete an intake screening to determine if you are eligible for our services. If you are eligible for services, you will meet with a licensed addiction counselor to complete an alcohol and drug assessment, which will determine your level of care placement. Some of the benefits of our IOP are anonymity and flexibility as you can live at home, maintain your employment and family responsibilities, and receive intensive outpatient addiction treatment. You will have a compassionate, experienced, and supportive treatment team alongside you on your road to recovery.

How long is my first appointment?

Your first appointment is the admission process, which takes about 90 minutes, an hour and a half. You will sign admission forms, complete an alcohol and drug assessment to determine your level of care placement, review the guidelines of the program, and develop an individualized treatment plan. The first half hour is for completing paperwork, and the remaining one hour is the alcohol and drug assessment with the substance abuse counselor.

It is my child’s/teenager’s first session, should I attend?

Yes, a parent or legal guardian has to be present at the first session to sign paperwork and help to provide the client’s history for the psychosocial, alcohol and drug assessment.
